Επανέκδοση του Βιβλίου «The Blight of Asia»  «Μία από τις έντονες αισθήσεις που διατηρώ από τη Σμύρνη είναι ντροπή γιατί ανήκω στο ανθρώπινο γένος»

«Στη παντοτινή μνήμη των Ποντίων, Αρμενίων και της Πόλης της Σμύρνης» με την υποσημείωση ότι «Μπορεί να συγχωρήσουμε, αλλά ποτέ δεν θα ξεχάσουμε» είναι αφιερωμένη η νέα έκδοση του βιβλίου «The Blight of Asia» του Αμερικανού Γενικού Προξένου στη Σμύρνη George Horton, του Ελληνο-Αμερικανικού Εθνικού Συμβουλίου.
Πρόκειται για μία πρωτοβουλία του Ε.Ε.Σ. που αποσκοπεί στην ενημέρωση και ευαισθητοποίηση των μελών του Αμερικανικού Κογκρέσσου, της Αμερικανικής Γερουσίας, των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, των Ευρωπαίων Πρέσβεων στις Η.Π.Α και της ευρύτερης Αμερικανικής Κοινωνίας.
«Το βιβλίο εστάλη δωρεάν προς Αμερικανούς πολιτικούς και προσωπικότητες της Αμερικανικής κοινωνίας, επισημαίνει ο κ. Σπυρόπουλος. Τα έσοδα από τη διάθεση του βιβλίου στην αγορά θα διατεθούν στην Παμποντιακή Ομοσπονδία Αμερικής για να συνεχίσει την προσπάθειά της για την αναγνώριση της γενοκτονίας καθώς και στα Ηνωμένα Εθνη για την προώθηση των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων ώστε να μην επαναληφθούν παρόμοιες τραγωδίες. Ο Τζωρτζ Χόρτον υπήρξε διεθνώς ο πρώτος υπερασπιτής των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων για τους Ελληνες και Αρμένιους». Στον πρόλογο του βιβλίου επισημαίνεται ότι: «Ήρθε ο καιρός οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες επισήμως να αναγνωρίσουν την γενοκτονία 353.000 Ποντίων της Μαύρης θάλασσας και 1.500.000 Αρμενίων, γεγονότα που περιγράφει με αδιαμφισβήτητα στοιχεία στα απομνημονεύματά του ο Αμερικανός Γενικός Πρόξενος στη Σμύρνη, Τζ. Χόρτον». Ο Αμερικανός Πρόξενος υπηρέτησε στην περιοχή επί 30 χρόνια και υπήρξε αυτόπτης μάρτυρας των γεγονότων. Το βιβλίο του γράφθηκε το 1922 στη Σμύρνη και πρωτοεκδόθηκε το 1926 στις Η.Π.Α. Το Ε.Ε.Σ. απευθύνει έκκληση προς τους ομογενείς να προμηθευτούν το βιβλίο και να το χαρίσουν σε φίλους τους Αμερικανούς πολιτικούς και πολίτες ώστε να γίνουν γνωστά τα γεγονότα της Μικρασιατικής καταστροφής.

«THE BLIGHT OF ASIA» The Hellenic American National Council dedicated the reprint of the memoirs of the General Consul of the United States to Smyrna during WWI, George Horton, in lasting memory of Pontians, Armenians, and the City of Smyrna with the remark We may forgive, but we will never forget . The initiative of H.A.N.C. intends to inform and sensitize the American Public, the United States Congress, the United States Senate, the United Nations and the European Ambassadors in USA about the systematic genocide of Armenians and Greek Pontians in Asia Minor by Mohammedans and the True Story of the Burning of Smyrna.
All the proceeds of the book will be donated to the United Nations for the observance of human rights so that such tragedies will never be repeated and to the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA to support its effort for the official recognition by the US administration of the genocide of 353.000 Pontians of the Black Sea and 1.5000.000 Armenians.
Hortons account of the burning of Smyrna and the forced exodus of its Greek and Armenian inhabitants chronicles the last stages in the ethnic cleansing of Asia Minor of its native Christian population. According to Horton, the sacking of Smyrna was due to the military prowess of Turkish nationalists, imperial rivalries amongst western powers, and commercial interest groups seeking advantages in the emerging Turkish republic. The President of the Hellenic American National Council- an umbrella organization of the Hellenic American Community in the United States- Mr. Th. Spyropoulos notes that Never in the history of mankind have there been more atrocities and such genocide in order to uproot population from Asia Minor, thriving there for thousand of years. The history of Greeks of the Black Sea and Asia Minor goes back for thousand of years into mythology and continued through the millennia creating centers of civilization, philosophy and education, bringing different cultures into peaceful coexistence .
